All last month, the pest control industry celebrated National Pest Management Month. The purpose of this observance is to recognize the vital role pest control companies have in protecting public health and property. Imagine trying to defeat a termite infestation without the help of a professional! Although we don’t often think about it, the pest management industry keeps us safe and healthy.

During the month of April, the Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA) and the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) spread awareness about the importance of working with licensed pest control companies. Pest management experts may not be able to get rid of pests completely, but they know how to take control of situations and prevent health and safety risks.

Be Proactive: Pest Prevention Tips

We can’t leave everything to the experts. There are things we can do to reduce the impact that pests have on homes and businesses. National Pest Management Month also aims to educate homeowners and business owners on the steps they can take to keep pests out. The best approach to pest control, after all, is being proactive.

Here are a few tips for maintaining a pest-free environment:

  • Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home.
  • Keep branches and shrubs trimmed away from the home.
  • Replace weather stripping around doors and windows.
  • Repair rotted roof shingles and siding.
  • Keep basements, attics, and crawlspaces ventilated and dry.
  • Store garbage in sealed containers; dispose of it regularly.
  • Store firewood away from the home and off the ground.

Gearing Up For Summer: Bed Bug Awareness

During the week of April 22-28, the NPMA gave special attention to bed bugs. Bed Bug Awareness Week spreads awareness about bed bugs, how to recognize them, and how to avoid bringing them home. This information is especially important as we head into the summer months when traveling is more prevalent. Though bed bugs can be picked up from any public place, they are commonly discovered when traveling. A bit of awareness goes a long way in not bringing these pests home. It’s worth the discussion, as bed bug treatments can cost thousands of dollars and months of headaches.

While it’s great to have a month dedicated to pest management awareness, we must remember that this mindset should exist all year long. And, if you find yourself in need of a pest control company, remember how lucky we are to have them!
